Vincent J. Giblin, General President

   

Washington, D. C. – The General Executive Board of the International Union of Operating Engineers elected Vincent J. Giblin as general president, effective March 1, 2005.  Giblin, who had served as general secretary-treasurer since 2002, succeeds Frank Hanley, who announced his retirement after 15 years in the position.

            A 40-year veteran of Local 68 in New Jersey, Giblin served as business manager of the local from 1975 to 2004.  He was elected an International vice president in 1989, a position he held until his election as general secretary-treasurer.  In addition, he served as president of the Northeast Conference of Operating Engineers and chaired the IUOE Stationary Committee.

He was named a member of the Board of Directors of Blue Cross-Blue Shield of New Jersey in 1993 and has served as chairman of the Board since July 1994.  He also has served in various capacities on myriad government and industry endeavors, including the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, the New Jersey Department of Labor’s Office of Boiler Pressure Vessel Compliance, and the Atlantic City Gaming Commission.

Giblin is a graduate of the Harvard University Trade Union Program.  He is married and has three children.

          Headquartered in Washington, D. C., the IUOE represents 400,000 members working in heavy construction and in the operation and maintenance of commercial complexes and buildings, as well as in other occupations, in the U. S. and Canada.
