Tim Reese, a crane operator and Local 77 member, was the subject of a recent article on the Washington Post website.

A sky-high crane operator watches post-recession Washington come back to life
 (Washington Post, February 23, 2012)

“After going more than a year without work because of the recession and the hit it took on construction, he’s back at work. 'Suddenly, there are cranes all over the place again,' says Reese. 'It’s always beautiful. Almost every day, you can see the sun march up the horizon as the seasons change. I’m glad to be up here. Hell, I’m glad to be working.'"

Tim Reese, who works in the sky, sees a Washington that few people do. From his daily perch above the city he can take in a swath stretching from Silver Spring to Springfield just by turning his head. (Ben de la Cruz, Washington Post)

"The benefits of being a union member are numerous. Not only are wages better, health insurance is affordable, the pension plan is one of the best, and all members have the opportunity to further their skills with the apprentice program.

The health insurance benefits are top notch and very appealing.

It’s important to me that people know I am a union member and have worked my way up the ranks before becoming a business owner…I still enjoy operating, even though I don’t get much time in the seat any more. I chose to retain my membership, I felt that even though I was now an owner it didn’t change my perspective, and I trust in the principles behind the union.  It’s not just about the owner, but a team effort.  Everyone in the USA deserves a decent wage and fair benefits."

"On September 16th, 2006, Poindexter Excavating embarked on a massive project in Greensburg, Indiana; better known as Honda. Heading into a time of year that is not exactly “primetime” for an excavating contractor, Poindexter was faced with the challenge of moving approximately 50,000 cubic yards of earth per day to meet the unprecedented schedule set forth by Global Performance. With the seemingly impossible task of moving in excess of 8,000,000 cu. yards, 6,500,000 of which needed compaction, Poindexter would need to call on proven subcontractors to assist in other areas of the project.

Also needed would be a very large amount of operating engineers; many with GPS experience. Local 181 and district business agent Aaron Jackson were extremely helpful in this process. Aaron was called on day and night due to Poindexter running two shifts around the clock. His hard work and helpfulness is greatly appreciated.

In all, Poindexter Excavating and it’s subcontractors would move 8,074,442 cubic yards of dirt, install 54,594 feet of storm sewer, 67,955 feet of under drains, 18,822 feet of sanitary sewer, 27,765 feet of waterline, placed 585,925 tons of stone, laid 578,916 square yards of asphalt, and seeded 1296 acres! A staggering 302,098 man hours was accumulated during the project in approximately 12 months! Poindexter Excavating would like to thank all of it’s subcontractors on a job well done and most importantly safely and on time."
