Helmets to Hardhats
IUOE is proud to partner with Helmets to Hardhats, a national, nonprofit program that connects transitioning active-duty service members, veterans, National Guard members, and Reservists with high-quality training and career opportunities in the skilled trades.
The program supports a successful transition from military service to civilian careers by providing direct pathways into registered apprenticeship programs within the construction and infrastructure industries. Many of these opportunities are offered through federally approved earn-while-you-learn apprenticeship programs, allowing participants to gain skills, earn wages, and build long-term careers.
Opportunities Through IUOE
Through Helmets to Hardhats, eligible veterans can access IUOE’s certified training and apprenticeship programs. These programs prepare participants for careers as Operating Engineers and Stationary Engineers—supporting construction, pipeline, energy, industrial, and facility operations.
Most Helmets to Hardhats participants enter IUOE apprenticeship programs with little or no prior experience in the trade. Training is designed to build skills from the ground up and is provided at little or no cost to the veteran. Apprentices receive structured classroom instruction alongside hands-on, on-the-job training, preparing them to become skilled professionals in their chosen craft.
IUOE apprenticeship programs emphasize safety, technical excellence, and long-term career growth—offering veterans a clear pathway to stable employment, competitive wages, and strong benefits.
A Proven Pathway for Veterans
Because these apprenticeship programs are federally and state approved, eligible veterans may use GI Bill® benefits to supplement their income while training, providing added financial stability during the transition period.
In addition, Helmets to Hardhats offers specialized support through its Wounded Warrior program, which connects disabled veterans with training and employment opportunities aligned with their abilities and career goals.
Benefits for Employers
Employers also benefit from Helmets to Hardhats. Registered employers gain access to a national database of highly motivated, disciplined, and skilled veterans seeking careers in the trades—helping meet workforce needs while supporting those who have served.
