IUOE Job Corps
Job Corps
IUOE has proudly partnered with the Job Corps program for more than 45 years, helping young adults build foundational skills and prepare for successful careers in the skilled trades. Through contracts with the U.S. Department of Labor, IUOE provides career technical training to hundreds of students each year at Job Corps centers across the United States. All IUOE Job Corps instructors and staff are IUOE local union members, bringing real-world experience and industry expertise into both the classroom and the training field.
About Job Corps
Job Corps is the largest nationwide residential career training and education program in the United States, administered by the U.S. Department of Labor. It serves young people ages 16 through 24 by providing free career training, education, and support services to help them succeed in today’s job market. Since its creation in 1964, Job Corps has prepared millions of young people for careers in a wide range of industries. The program continues to train thousands of participants each year at more than 100 centers nationwide.
Pre-Apprenticeship Training Pathways with IUOE
IUOE Job Corps programs serve as pre-apprenticeship pathways, introducing participants to the skills, work ethic, and safety standards required for success in the trades. Training prepares students for future entry into registered apprenticeship programs or for direct employment within the industry. IUOE has trained thousands of Job Corps students in foundational areas, including:
- Operating Engineer skills (heavy equipment operation)
- Equipment maintenance and mechanics
- Stationary engineering fundamentals
- Asphalt paving and related construction skills
Hands-On, Career-Focused Training
IUOE Job Corps training typically averages approximately one year, though the program is self-paced to accommodate individual progress. Instruction follows nationally recognized apprenticeship standards and emphasizes hands-on learning. Through a blended approach of classroom instruction and hands-on equipment and field training, participants build confidence, practical skills, and job readiness. Training generally includes:
- Approximately 30% classroom instruction
- Approximately 70% hands-on equipment and field training
- Work-based learning opportunities through community service projects, simulated job sites, or partnerships with local employers
Next Steps After Job Corps
Students who successfully complete an IUOE Job Corps program receive support transitioning to the next phase of their careers. Graduates are referred to IUOE local unions for apprenticeship opportunities or connected with job placement services within the industries they trained for. Many graduates continue their careers through IUOE apprenticeship programs and go on to become journey-level Operating Engineers, instructors, local union leaders, and contractors.
