Golden Gate Bridge

The span connecting California’s north-south U.S. Highway 101 across San Francisco Bay was known as the bridge that couldn’t be built. Construction on the Golden Gate Bridge began in 1933. The bridge was opened on May 27, 1937. IUOE members from Local 3 completed the job in four years — six months ahead of schedule.

This project was the first to mandate use of hard hats and safety gear for all workers.
