IUOE’s Earn While You Learn apprenticeship programs offer a direct pathway into the skilled trades by combining paid, on-the-job experience with structured classroom and field training. Apprentices build real-world skills, earn competitive wages, and gain access to long-term benefits while preparing for stable, rewarding careers.
How Earn While You Learn Works
As an IUOE apprentice, you earn while you learn—receiving competitive wages while gaining valuable skills on the job. Apprentices also have access to the same benefits and protections enjoyed by IUOE members, including healthcare coverage, retirement benefits, and ongoing training opportunities throughout their careers.
Training takes place at more than 100 local union training centers across the United States and Canada, as well as at the International Training & Education Center (ITEC)—one of the most advanced training facilities of its kind. Many training centers are state-of-the-art and feature advanced simulators along with dedicated indoor and outdoor training environments, allowing apprentices to build confidence and competence before working in live job-site or facility settings.
IUOE Earn While You Learn programs prepare apprentices for careers in two primary trades:
Operating Engineer Apprenticeship
Operating Engineer apprentices train to operate, maintain, and support the equipment used to build and maintain critical infrastructure. This work spans construction, pipeline and energy projects, and industrial environments. Training may include:
- Heavy equipment operation
- Hoisting and portable operations
- Pipeline and energy support work
- Equipment maintenance and surveying
Stationary Engineer Apprenticeship
Stationary Engineer apprentices train to operate and maintain the mechanical and electrical systems that keep buildings and facilities running safely and efficiently. Training may include:
- HVAC and central plant systems
- Boilers, chillers, and generators
- Electrical and mechanical systems
- Building automation and controls
