Local Training Schools 

IUOE’s local training schools form the foundation of our commitment to building a highly skilled, safety-focused workforce. Through joint labor–management training trusts, IUOE local unions and signatory employers invest year after year in comprehensive training programs that support Operating Engineers and Stationary Engineers at every stage of their careers.

Across the United States and Canada, more than 100 IUOE local training schools provide hands-on instruction led by experienced journey-level professionals. These programs ensure members have access to the training, tools, and real-world experience needed to work safely, efficiently, and productively across today’s demanding industries. Many training centers are state-of-the-art and feature advanced simulators along with dedicated indoor and outdoor training environments, allowing apprentices to build confidence and competence before working in live job-site or facility settings.

Training for Operating Engineers
Local training schools offer Operating Engineer training that reflects the full scope of work performed in the field. Training is designed to build technical skill, situational awareness, and a strong safety culture across a wide range of work environments. Training combines classroom instruction, simulation, and hands-on field experience using the same equipment members operate on job sites. Operating Engineer training may focus on areas such as:

• Heavy Equipment Operations — excavators, loaders, bulldozers, motor graders, and other earthmoving equipment
• Hoisting & Portable (H&P) Operations — cranes, lifting systems, and material-handling equipment
• Pipeline & Energy Operations — excavation, trenching, material handling, right-of-way work, and restoration
• Mechanics — inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of construction equipment
• Surveying — layout, measurement, and site preparation using precise linear and angular measurement techniques

Training for Stationary Engineers
IUOE local training schools also provide comprehensive training for Stationary Engineers who operate and maintain the mechanical and electrical systems that keep buildings and facilities running safely and efficiently. Training is designed to prepare members to respond to real-world system challenges in commercial buildings, healthcare facilities, campuses, industrial plants, and public-sector environments. Stationary Engineer training may include instruction in:

• HVAC and central plant operations
• Boilers, chillers, generators, and turbines
• Electrical and mechanical systems
• Building automation and controls
• Maintenance planning, safety, and regulatory compliance
